Breakage is often caused when hair is lacking a balance of protein and or moisture. Breakage differs from shedding in that with breakage, the hair has snapped off from a point along the strand and does not have a root attached. Shedding is an natural process in hair growth (Humans can shed 50 to 100 hairs per day) and the hair is released with the root attached. Excessive shedding however may be a sign of some underlying problem that may need to be addressed.
Hair goes through different phases: growth, rest and shedding so losing 50-100 hairs a day is within a normal range. If you suspect that your hair loss is excessive then you need to start a tracker to help you identify any triggers (e.g. stress, dietary changes, recently giving birth).
